Port Slush

Stephen and I wanted to try something new, and he had this idea to blend wine with ice to make a slush. It was a good idea, but since wine is so low alcohol, our blended drink would probably need some kind of vodka or other mixer to make it a little stronger. Ugh, not a big fan of vodka. So then we had a brilliant idea - let's use port! Port is about 17 - 20% alcohol, so it's perfect! We went to Specs and asked for the cheapest port that was still tasty, and left with a bottle of $5.99 port... yep... that cheap. This is obviously not the $30/bottle kind of port you sip and savor. Then, we poured in half the bottle with 1/2 a bag of mixed berries, a squeeze of lime, a ton of ice and viola! Instant port slush!

I rate this drink an A! It's cheap, very tasty, and I feel like it might be healthier than other mixed drinks you could drink filled with tons of sugar. It tastes very fruity and pretty much like a fruit smoothie. The huge glasses we made were about 2 drinks worth of alcohol. I recommend trying this at home!

Messina Hof Port

I wasn't such a fan of the other Messina Hof Port we tried a little while ago, but this one is GREAT! I don't know if it's a different year or what, but this one was actually quite delicious, while the other was almost undrinkable. Yay for Messina Hof redeeming themselves! :)

Messina Hof Port

Ugh, this port... I just don't even know. It's not good at all. It has been a really long time since we opened a port, and this one was clearly the wrong one. Sorry Messina Hof, you have some good wines and even a good port, but this one was gross. It tasted like cherry cough syrup and there were basically no redeeming qualities. It was thin, flat, flavorless, and uninteresting. It's about $17, and not worth it. That's all.

Port Sour

Yuck, yuck, yuck! Ok lets start over... I got this port when Grapevine was going out of business and thought it would be interesting because its a white port, which is pretty uncommon. It was bottom shelf, about $12 (on sale for 8). The SMELL is gross but I tasted it anyway and the TASTE is gross as well. It is "extra dry", which means it is not sweet at all, and is very strong at 20% alcohol.

It was not drinkable, so I tried to come up with a solution. I tried mixing it with lemonade to give it some sweetness, and it actually became much better. I named this new drink a "port sour".

I still have the whole bottle, and although the port sour was acceptable, it was by no means delicious. I will have to think some more about what to do with the rest of this nasty port. :/
